6 ways to be more thankful

How can you be more thankful? Here are some ideas to kickstart the gratitude!

Feast your senses. Savour a mouth-watering bite of food. Soak in a glorious fuschia sunset. Breathe in the smell of coffee or baking bread from the café you just walked pass. Listen to your favourite music. Give someone a physical hug. And remember that if you can do all these things, you have one of the greatest things to be thankful for – a healthy, functioning body.

Make a daily gratitude list. At the end of every day, list out things in your day you are thankful for, even the littlest things. You might find that there’s a lot more to be thankful for than you would’ve thought!

Act out your gratitude. Buy a meal or write a note for someone who’s done you a favour. Always say ‘Thank you’. These physical actions remind us of the reality that we have things to be thankful for.

Surround yourself with grateful people. Personal growth author Ken Keyes Jr. said, “A loving person lives in a loving world.  A hostile person lives in a hostile world; everyone you meet is your mirror.” The same can be said of grateful people. Surrounded by thankful people, you will become more thankful as well.

Reach out to the less fortunate. While it’s easy to compare ourselves to those better off, there are even more people who aren’t as privileged. Even if you can’t spare much time, just take a weekend off to visit a children’s shelter or community welfare project. You will likely come away with a change of perspective and a more grateful attitude.

Inspire gratefulness with quotes. A quick search on the Internet for “Thankfulness quotes” turns out a host of results. Each day, copy one down on a post-it and stick it somewhere you will be able to look at often throughout the day. If you’re feeling especially inspired, stick a quote somewhere for a friend / family member!

Here are two, for starters:

“Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.” -Brian Tracy

“In ordinary life we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.” -Dietrich Bonhoeffer
