10 ways to make someone feel special:


We all have people we treasure in our lives, but how often do we stop to make sure they know it? Here are some simple ways to do just that.

Loved ones / close friends:

  • Write a handwritten note. Nothing says “You are thought of and appreciated” better than a note that took effort to handwrite.
  • Praise the person in his / her absence. Nothing conveys genuine admiration as when a compliment is heard from a third party.
  • Say, “Remember when…” Bring up memories with the person that you treasure or that made a difference in your life.
  • Prioritize the person and make sure he / she knows it. Say, “I have an important event I’d like to attend, but I’d rather spend the day with you because you are more important.”
  • Be ready to offer help when needed. Being there when it matters is the ultimate way to make someone feel cherished.

Acquaintances / someone you just met:

  • Remember names and use them. By constantly addressing people using their names, you will capture and hold a person’s attention more effectively.
  • Create ‘inside’ conversation. Making insider jokes or bringing up topic of conversations specific to you and the person will make that person feel unique and included in your circle of trust.
  • Pay attention to the details. Show you are paying attention by making note of small details like habits, personal preferences, and refer to those details again later in conversation.
  • Go the extra mile. Buy that person a cup of coffee or offer to help out with something – just because.
  • Smile. A genuine, unrushed, unforced smile says, “I notice you. I’m pleased that you’re here.”
